SpongeBob Square Pants or simply known as SpongeBob , is an American surreal comedy-animated television series created by marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg broadcast by Nickelodeon . The characters' hilarious adventures take place in an underwater city called Bikini Bottom at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
